I had put the bike in front of me to go off this cliff so when it stopped, my body went into the back of the bike which was all fine and great except that metal is harder than fat so the lever went through the medial side of my thigh . I looked down and saw my bright yellow fat and a white thing coming out of my leg and was like oh shit that should hurt but it doesnt really I must be in shock. and then I thought, I wonder if I can still go off that jump at the bottom (I couldn't).

so then I had to ride all the way down the effing mountain to our campsite. Rachel was sleeping so we woke her up and then rode even farther down to where the truck was then drove 35 minutes which seemed like forever to the hospital. I was like, can I have some pain medecine and some stiches but not a lot because I don't have health insurance so please give me the cheap stuff. they were like , 'you should never put a tournaquit (sp**) around your leg like that' a big bruise had formed where we wrapped the belt around my leg.

so then they sewed me up and Rachel's boyfriend bought me a sandwich with bacon and I ate it and went to sleep.

Very exciting but now I cant ride so I am spending lots of time taking apart my bike and putting it back together and checking out Fort Collins and doing what normal people do who dont ride their bikes all day.

Turns out the lever just ate through my layer of fat (thank god I am a girl with adipose tissue on my thigh) but didnt go through the fascia of the muscle.

so that is that. Hope all is well RoseSupport for Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00042618791125358171noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5033269888814140077.post-84590727156605959042009-04-17T09:22:00.000-07:002009-04-17T09:28:29.766-07:00Hearing Friday April 17th 2009Today Adam Desjardin changed his plea. He pled guilty to one felony count of leaving the scene of an accident. He pled no contest to negligent operation. He also pled guilty to two unrelated misdemeanor drug charges (down from five felonies). I was interviewed by Channel 3 and Fox 44 but I was not in a great mood to speak my mind. I just kind of broke down.

This weekend, I, along with the rest of UVM Cycling, am going down to Hanover to race. Collegiate Cycling is a real blast--the perfect way to ease into the season, weather you are recovering from an accident or starting to bike race. It should be really nice down there. I have been doing some nice riding this past week with people from around. It sure beats riding by myself.
The last couple of weeks, I have been in and out of the hospital getting surgeries and what have you. I like bike riding way more than going under the knife.

Take care. Go outside.
RoseSupport for Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00042618791125358171noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5033269888814140077.post-51085871741135146642009-01-21T18:48:00.000-08:002009-01-21T19:01:35.057-08:00January 21Yes. Finally a new president. Went ski racing today. Every time I race, I imagine a bike race. I am skiing my way back into shape. I know I am getting in shape because man oh man it is hard. I got all the ingredients though: competition, skis, snow, competition, competition, and support. Sometimes it is hard because there is really no one I know really closely who has been through the same thing. Yet there is always the feeling of the whole bike community. I can't help but think we are all in it together, and I just drew the short stick. I hope no one else ends up it like I did. It is too hard for anyone to have to go through. I can handle it though because I get a lot of help.
RoseSupport for Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00042618791125358171noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5033269888814140077.post-8399388170052556052009-01-07T14:25:00.000-08:002009-01-07T14:31:37.430-08:00Update: January 7thHello all,
I Hope the New Year has found you well. I am determined to get back to racing now, no matter how hard it is. I kind of forgot that feeling of stepping off the pavement onto your pedals. It is kind of like flying. I went to Florida and as anxious as I was to ski, I was even more eager to ride my bike. Man, and as sweet as riding is racing is where it's at. I used to not even understand people who didn't race. It is nice to take a step back but right now I am going to concentrate on getting better at biking fast. Cheers,
RoseSupport for Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00042618791125358171noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5033269888814140077.post-85272088583441765412008-12-01T17:14:00.001-08:002009-01-15T19:03:05.021-08:00.Support for Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00042618791125358171noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5033269888814140077.post-64659403844363772322008-11-20T15:14:00.000-08:002008-11-20T15:16:24.033-08:00Support for Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00042618791125358171noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5033269888814140077.post-20090042589541283412008-11-16T18:36:00.001-08:002008-11-16T18:43:18.782-08:0011-16Wow it has been so long. I don't know how all those internet bloggers update daily. There is so much more life to be lived. Speaking of living life, I rode rollers today. Although this sounds dismal, it was a skill which I had to re-conquer to convince myself I am recovering. I did it no handed (Look ma, no hands!) and yes, I rode 'em no handed one footed. yeah! To those who have not heard of rollers, they are device used to ride indoors which requires balance and suppleness (www.kreitler.com).
Now, I return to the fifty-something page grant proposal I am reading.
Best,
RoseSupport for Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00042618791125358171noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5033269888814140077.post-44871880737105567132008-11-04T15:22:00.000-08:002008-11-04T15:31:24.947-08:0011-4Election Day. I ddin't vote today; I voted absentee last week don't worry. I think this will be the highest turnout election I've ever seen. We will see though.
On another note, I got temporary lower teeth yesterday. They are a little uncomfortable so I cannot wear them for more than an hour. I think I will have them fixed considering the cost and the fact that I will be wearing them until I get implants (which is in forever). I can now eat a banana without breaking it into little bite size pieces. It is nice to have a full smile again.
On another note, I started a job yesterday. It really is exhausting so I am taking tomorrow off (and I have two appointments). I am working in a lab part time at UVM. I am so happy to regain more independence by making a little money.
Free ice cream today at Ben and Jerry's. Don't mind if I do...
RoseSupport for Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00042618791125358171noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5033269888814140077.post-80895860052041650222008-10-27T14:29:00.000-07:002008-10-27T14:41:04.450-07:0010-27My lack of activity on the blog is the best testament to my recovery. I have been going out on short rides and doing a zillion situps to get my strength back. I spend less time sitting at the house (read: at the computer) and more time outside. I went home last weekend to an amazing Kingdom Trails benefit. Slim rode plenty of the trails and I spent some time working at my house. I like how when you go to the Kingdom, nothing is a big deal. Nothing. It is counter-intuitive because there isn't a ton going on, but really, people over there don't get riled up very easy.
As far as my mouth goes, I learned today it is going to take a loong time. A wicked long time. Like 18 months. Holy cow. That is almost too long to write. I am doing willpower exercises to see if my teeth will grow back on their own.
Enjoy the weather and don't forget to vote.
Rose
Snow is coming!!!Support for Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00042618791125358171noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5033269888814140077.post-6131238760130157452008-10-14T17:01:00.000-07:002008-10-14T17:04:26.837-07:00X-ray from last month<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJ2kQruISeJMWFFhoqkHl-dplsrMb5O2TcSglKwjAj73gPWR2CtddsT4atyYQUsvYjPIJsEG-iC_WFLKvrjYw6emMkO88AGKzjTt_MjhMADmAwlZVutvRoK_66w5sHstIIF6nYKD3qh3s/s320/ct5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5257164436458199970" />Support for Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00042618791125358171noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5033269888814140077.post-48058040948439567702008-10-12T07:39:00.000-07:002008-10-12T07:47:30.839-07:0010-12Wow,
If a doctor ever talks about putting freeze-dried bone (aka cadaver bone) into your jaw, just politely say, "No, thank you." Your mouth will thank you.

On another note, I can now do a trick which I do not believe many people are able to do. I can close my jaws such that my molars are touching and then...drum roll please....stick out my tongue all the way. I no longer am the proud owner of my two front teeth and with no bottom teeth, I have this nice opening. I don't even think little kids can do this because they do not have molars yet. Are you jealous?

Besides me and my mouth procedure, there are two thing happening this weekend: Gloucester and Eastern's at Sunday RIver. Hopefully at this time next year, I will recollect how much I want to ride and race. But for now, it is just recover recover recover.
RoseSupport for Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00042618791125358171noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5033269888814140077.post-10095121025287472782008-10-05T11:01:00.000-07:002008-10-05T11:07:15.551-07:0010-5Hello,
Today is Lance's day isn't it? the day his life got totally turned upside down. I think.

Anyway, I have to tell you what I do for entertainment while I'm on the mend. I walked out of my house the other day to see four cop cars and a bunch of cops surrounding the apartment building across the street. upon closer inspection it was determined there was a episode of cops happening right here in the north end. we did what any self respecting person would do and tailgated. We sat on the bumper eating oatmeal watching the action. The police searched the apartment and took out bags with white dust spillling from them. They weren't very careful and some of the dust got onto the pavement. Other people came out and started sucking it in their noses off the road.
Very funny,
RoseSupport for Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00042618791125358171noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5033269888814140077.post-13514467215915795092008-09-29T08:18:00.000-07:002008-09-29T08:36:01.824-07:009-29-08Hello,
Man, what a chilly morning. It is good to see the leaves changing and winter setting in. The biker in me hates the winter, but the Vermonter in me can only love it. Time is passing and I am only getting better.
Today I am attempting something I never did when I was well. I am going to try to walk up the hill Burlington is built on. It is actually harder than it sounds.
This past weekend, I went up to the cross races in Williston. To think that the Verge season opener took place twenty minutes from my house! I was surprised more people didn't turn out. There wasn't much publicity about it. Jamey gave us a pretty exciting race on Sunday with a lethal attack in the last lap. I got wickedly jealous of the racers but it was awesome to be out there and not in my living room.
The most exciting thing that happened this weekend was a matter of the palate. I was able to eat a little bit of steak which was cut up very very tiny. It was delicious. Man, I have learned that you appreciate things a lot more when they are taken away. That is why I can't wait to get back on the bike.
I want to thank you for reading this blog,
RoseSupport for Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00042618791125358171noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5033269888814140077.post-79489214045186357462008-09-26T07:20:00.000-07:002008-09-26T07:26:42.197-07:00Update 9-26-08well well well,
Yesterday's glorious Indian summer day found me asleep on the couch for three hours. Man, recovering is tough work. I have gotten my stitches out so my face is no longer blue. My eye is beginning to open more and more. Everyday, I go to PT to get my legs stretched out and loose from being in the hospital for so long. I am also stomaching *delicious* protein drinks to get jacked and tan.
again, thanks for all the notes,
RoseSupport for Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00042618791125358171noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5033269888814140077.post-48842943968631735312008-09-22T10:57:00.000-07:002008-09-22T11:02:07.132-07:00September 22, 2008 UpdateHello,
I am doing better and better everyday. Today I cooked oatmeal and took the bus to UVM. It is weird riding the bus because I used to just bike everywhere. On the bus, a man came up to me and started talking to me. He had heard about the accident and had sent me a card even though I didn't know him. I really appreciate everyone's support. You know I am a very social person so it helps a lot. I like to read all the posts and email and really appreciate getting news about anything.
RoseSupport for Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00042618791125358171noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5033269888814140077.post-34916778843526840822008-09-18T18:48:00.000-07:002008-09-18T19:05:06.493-07:00THE UPDATEHello,

I am improving with leaps and bounds everyday. On Wednesday morning (after getting the biggest blood boogers pulled out of my nose) I managed to escape from the hospital. I took a trip through campus to the Davis Center to send a few emails and drink some orange juice. As I was walking through the Davis Center wearing a hospital gown it was a little drafty but I managed to conquer three flights of stairs. Some students going to classes were a little scared I think.

Once I got back to the hospital they realized that I was able to leave the hospital and was discharged. I am currently at my house in Burlington and really appreciate all visitors. I read all the posts. Thank you.

RoseSupport for Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00042618791125358171noreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5033269888814140077.post-66676120440422740692008-09-16T20:36:00.000-07:002008-09-16T20:50:09.862-07:00From Rose's Sister AmieFun, energetic, exciting, adventurous, funny, good, best, satisfied, fast, determined, driven, and a great sister. Rose has grown up to be a wonderful sister. At her races I watch her drive to be the front of the pack, I watch her eyes stay on the competitor, and I watch her smile when she crosses the finish line. It's sad for me to see Rose in the hospital but I am confident that she is getting the care and the attention that she needs to make a full recovery. I can not wait to see Rose out on her bike again!

I want to take this time to thank EVERYONE for EVERYTHING. Me, my family, and Rose can not thank people enough. I just got off the phone with her! It's 10:30pm! What is going on you might ask? Well, I'll tell you: Rose is holding onto Slim's hand going for her 4th or 5th jaunt around the hospital. She's moving safely around the hospital on her own two feet! This girl is unbelievable. I was there from 10-5 today and kept some visitors at bay whilst the little one slept and then gave her a leg massage to prep the legs for some grueling training sessions -a foot massage, too because she walked about 300m to "the view" at the end of an adjacent building. Rose is doing well. I even had the pleasure of feeding her some of her first "food" (pureed chops and some mashed potates). She drinks from small cups and could lift herself from the bed and navigate to the exit in the case of a fire if she wanted to (yeah, I'd put money on it). She doesn't like going fast in the wheelchair yet, but we'll see what tomorrow brings.

I'd like to post my mother's wishes:

"Dear Rose,
When Will called me to "update" me about his life at UVM, I was stunned to tears at hearing your story. It's something us Mothers (and Fathers) desperately hope as "never" happening to our children. So, I just want to tell you (because Will might forget) that I'm very much on your team with Will, I feel for your parents and I'm cheering for your full and rapid recovery because I know how much you (must) love the bike...and will be right back on it, racing to great victories! Love, Louisa (Dugan)"

Another kind fellow said:

"The web site is quite touching. I have sent a little something along and am going to share it with my sister who lives in Hartland, VT as it may be of interest to her also." Karl Volkman

The pain is worse at night and she gets startled from bad dreams but she's a real trooper. Even I, on occasion wake in the middle of the night thinking about Rose and the pain she's been enduring. I can't say I know someone as tough as she is. I'm in the library trying to catch up on some homework now so I must get back to it, but Rose, keep up the unbelievably fast progress! You have the support of thousands.

We're all watching you.Support for Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00042618791125358171noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5033269888814140077.post-16376842494331271312008-09-15T18:29:00.000-07:002008-09-15T18:39:10.196-07:00Update on Rose, Website, & The Rally for Safe StreetsEarlier I visited Rose with Vinnie, Will, and Slim. Rose is looking a lot better and is still herself, busting on us and making jokes. She told us how one of the nurses told her she should get up because she had been in bed for too long and Rose said, "Uhh, yeaaah.... I got hit by a car." We all know how tough Rose is but your support has kept her going strong. While we were there, Kevin and Tom from GMBC told Rose that they were going to buy her a new bike!! The way that friends, local cyclists, and complete strangers have come together to help Rose is awesome.

The 'About Rose' section of the website will be finished tonight or tomorrow morning and I will add photos as people send them to me. Another visit to the Fletcher Allen Hospital for me (classes just ended). I went earlier and was happy to see her talking, looking around with the eye that is easier to open, and I even saw her sit in a chair next to her bed. She's been resting well. There have been fewer visitors (partially we've been pushing them out of the room to let her rest (God bless her fans, there are zillions) so she's been able to get some good shut-eye lately.
